Brighton Illustration: Then, Now, After…

‘Brighton Illustration: Then, Now, After…’
opens to the public from: 18 January to 14 February 2013
at the University of Brighton Gallery at the Faculty of Arts in Grand Parade, Brighton UK

I was invited to show some of my Future Fantasteek! artzines as part of this exhibition, celebrating graduates and lecturers from the Illustration course at Brighton. I studied Illustration BA, MA and PhD there... back in the day. (Future Fantasteek! issues 7,9 and 13 bottom middle of case)

The show had various themes, I was in with The Storytellers along with some of my tutors from back then: Alan Baker, Justin Todd and Chris McEwan.

Excerpt from website...
Top illustrators return to Brighton.
A star-studded line-up of the nation’s top illustrators has come together for a unique exhibition at the University of Brighton. All of the artists either graduated or worked at the university and they include Sir Quentin Blake CBE, who illustrated Roald Dahl books; Raymond Briggs, who illustrated The Snowman book; and award-winning children’s books illustrator Emily Gravett.
Curators of the exhibition “aim to reflect on the diversity of work originating from the Illustration studios at Brighton over the last 40 years, celebrating achievements and highlighting the possible direction illustrative practice may take in future.”

Pale Ire Press - launched

Jackie Batey
(work in progress, series of 10)

These three square prints are part of a series of 10. They represent common Rainbow Ruses sometimes know as 'Barnum Statements' - spurious phrases that contradict themselves in order to gain the confidence of a gullible person. Ideally they are the introduction phrases of the confidence trickster or phoney clairvoyant. In these images two opposing statements are illustrated with the various characters
trying to fool each other. These three prints represent lies told in order to win trust and then deceive. Ultimately a set of 10 false prophets. The characters are based on masks to underline the concealing a personality. The masks were drawn from reference in the British Museum and some were constructs of my own.

The images are two-colour lino prints 30cm x 30cm printed on light imitation Japanese paper, each embossed with the Pale Ire Press stamp. Numbered and signed by the artist.

Rainbow Ruse No.1
You make carefully considered choices BUT occasionally you surrender to the imp of the impulsive.

Rainbow Ruse No.2
You have oodles of acquaintances BUT only a handful of bosom buddies.

READ artist's book finished

135mm x 190mm, containing 12 pages and printed endpapers.
Saddle-stitched, with red book-cloth bound hard cover with lasercut lime acrylic title: READ.

Bound into the book is a small red acrylic lasercut magnifying glass that slots into a small wage slip envelope bound into the back inside cover.
Title page has a library-style insert, dated, embossed, numbered and signed.

The book also contains a bookmark to be used as a aide memoire.
Brighton, First edition of ten produced in 2012.

This book was created for the exhibition Beyond Dickens. This exhibition of international artists' books was held in Portsmouth in November 2012 as part of the Dickens bicentenary celebrations held in the town (Dicken's birthplace).

READ was inspired by Our Mutual Friend and takes the first 20 pages of this novel but hides within them a Dickens' quote about the act of reading. The quote describes reading as being like a code, whereby the initiated can open the world of books. The quote is hidden word by word on each page in pale turquoise that can only be seen clearly when viewed through the red lense on of the magnifying glass (see images below). The endpapers are images of monochrome violent waters since Our Mutual Friend begins and ends with drownings. READ is available in an edition of 10, contact me for details.

Copies are now located in:

  • Artists' Book Collection - Eton College Library, Eton College, Windsor, UK
  • Artists' Book Collection - The British Library, 96 Euston Road, London, UK
