This double-sided concertina is created from a folded sheet of vintage pianola paper (Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata, 1802). The rubber-stamped hands become increasingly contorted throughout the sequence as the player struggles to finish the piece, the fingers tangling completely at the finale.

This book contains an autobiographical narrative based upon my early recollections of practicing the piano and becoming increasingly frustrated with my inability to get my small fingers to stretch where they needed to be. The rubber-stamped hands are drawn from my own hands on the keyboard, exaggerated as the concertina unfolds. The book seeks to capture the love of listening to beautiful piano music and the realisation that this is unattainable for most of us.
From around 1880 a standard piano keyboard measurement has been fixed at 48” this replaced various piano-like instruments that traditionally had narrower keys. The average European adult male hand span is about one inch wider than that of a European adult woman meaning about 87% of women piano players can’t reach a tenth on a standard piano, which is a problem if you want to play Liszt among others. Hearing a piano played expertly can be a moving experience and the appreciation of the hours of repetitious practice that’s needed to acquire this skill is enhanced by one’s own lack of practice and inability.

The title ‘Piano Lessons’ also appears on the cover in Russian, as the book was first exhibited as part of Love and Music a collective artists’ book exhibition (during March 2020) in the House-Museum M.E. Saltykova-Shchedrina, Kurov, Russia 2020.
This book has a dual message; on one hand it’s a celebration of British chips but on the other it’s a lament to the declining cod stocks. The book is called Battered to reflect these two sides, both the cooking and the over-fishing. The Atlantic cod is a fish in crisis, stocks have suffered heavily from overfishing on both sides of the Atlantic. All stocks are classified as being overfished or at risk of being harvested unsustainably.

The sequence of pages through the book shows images of a packet of chips being eaten, next to an image of slowly disappearing cod. The reverse pages show photographs taken over a number of years in the U.K., Gibraltar and Spain of chip chop advertising boards or 'A' boards. The book is covered in a yellow check PVC tablecloth bound in the style of a Japanese account book - the pages are folded at the leading edge. The book is presented in a white chip shop bag that's been printed with a 2-colour lino of the title of the book. Each book holds within its pages a Mermaid Chip Fork and Miracle Fish.

Mermaid Chip Forks kindly provided by Ashwood Timber, Dartford, Kent, U.K.
Micro Artist’s Book containing a selection of illustrated idioms from several languages (Welsh, French, German, English, Latvian and Spanish). The idioms are all unkind expressions that reveal our inherent impatience with other human beings. The title ‘Mean Bone’ comes from the English expression “She hasn’t got a mean bone in her body” (to mean a kindly person), this book however, contains only ‘mean bones’ - all the snide comments that undermine. The Illustrations are a combination of scraper-board and lino cuts, artistic methods chosen to reflect the scratching and cutting of our languages - words can be painful.
Whilst travelling to work it was noted, by certain keen individuals, that the world appeared to be full of beings: other than the everyday. With the assistance of an adapted mobile phone camera these ghosts, animal spirits, numen and peri that crowd around us can now be revealed. Mostly captured during regular days – frequently when rain was in the sky. So far we have managed to identify only a few of them – what we know is here, along with our clearest photos and some of our thoughts.

The organizing committee announced a new project in the format artist's book titled "Winged phrases, maxims and aphorisms." This topic seems to us, it is of interest not only by the content, but opens before the artist opens up a wide range of technical and creative possibilities. Given the fact that this genre of literary work is brief, concise form, but succinct in content, does not require a large area for the realization of design, we decided to spend it in a miniature book format, that is no more than 100x75 mm.
This is due to the fact that this project, like the previous ones, we plan to show in other cities of the Kirov region and our neighboring regions, and a miniature format, facilitate as the transportation and placement...Each participant will receive a diploma, by the end of the exhibition and the electronic version of the Directory can be downloaded on the website.

18cm x 23 cm artist's book with 70 pages
Reproduced from a visual diary (sketchbook) drawn daily during October.
The original sketchbook is a vintage German 'home comments' book.
The illustrations were created using red and blue; Posca pens; Lamy fountain pens; coloured pencils; pastels; index cards and rubber stamps.

The visual diary was a direct response to emotions experienced throughout the month, visualised.
I am considering print options at the moment trying to figure out what feel I want from this book.

Once they are fully dried and fixed, I'll be folding 2m concertinas.
I'm planning on cloth-bound hard covers in fuchsia.

Working title: Morass Publication date: TBC when I'm totally happy with it.

The image is a vertical slice from the Bank of England down through the sewers past the London Underground and down into Hell. This satirical vertical cross-section contains two quotes about finance by Charles Dickens. This artist's book was inspired by Our Mutual Friend (1865) and the grasping need for money that integrates all levels of society.

From exhibition organisers website:

'Artists’ books' is a term coined by Diane Vanderlip to describe the pieces gathered in an
exhibition that she curated at Moore College of Art in 1973. But the concept itself arguably dates back much earlier. Defying description and evading definition, artists’ books have generally come to denote works of art crafted as or from actual books. They emphasize physical qualities over literary ones and necessitate unconventional relationships with their “readers,” demanding interactions that are radically distinct from those of traditional books. The difficulty intrinsic to such interactions speaks to the nature of artists’ books as ergodic texts, texts that Espen J. Aarseth maintains require a nontrivial, extra-intellectual effort to traverse. Despite, or perhaps because of, their elusiveness and complexity, such books, including those fashioned by Brian Dettmer, Georgia Russell, Kaspen, and many others, challenge the presumed parameters of the
textual and the visual. In doing so, they raise and respond to urgent questions regarding art, literature, and readership.

As part of the collective Artistsbooks Russia.

The exhibition is titled 'Winged phrases, maxims and aphorisms' in ARTIST BOOK format.

"This topic seems to us, it is of interest not only by the content, but opens before the artist a wide range of technical and creative possibilities. Given the fact that this genre of literary work is brief, concise form, but succinct in content, it does not require a large area for the realization of the design, we decided to spend it in a miniature book format, that is no more than 100x75 mm."
From the collective's website: http://artistsbook.ru/en/Projects/

I'll add more information when the dates/locations are confirmed, but here is a preview of my new book.
It will be a micro-book, concertina with hard covers.

It's a book of unkind sayings or mean idioms from a variety of languages.
The phrases we all use to call people liars, idiots and gas-bags.
Phrases of unkindness are universal and this is a celebration of that.

The title Mean Bone comes from the expression: 'She hasn't got a mean bone in her body'.
This is where all the 'mean bones' are, in my book.

The point being to make an image using ink every day during October and share of social media. There's a screen grab from Instagram below, I'll add the final images to this blog when it's all done and dusted. Here's a flick through my sketchbook...

My rules:
1. make image in sketchbook
2. only use black, white and red ink or felt pens
3. can add collaged elements ie. tape, paper, staples, stickers
4. can use rubber stamps I already have but only with black or red ink
5. show the materials used in the photos
6. stamp the date on the image

So here are the first batch as seen on Instagram
https://www.instagram.com/bateyjackie/
I was really pleased to get my paper about art-zines accepted for Confia16.

The conference is on illustration and animation and this year its venue was the
lovely TEATRO GIL VICENTE in Barcelos, Portugal.
(I'll add a link to my paper, when it becomes available).

My presentation title:
Satirical zines about computers, apps and social media: Art-zines from the Zineopolis Collection.
Friday 1st May 2015

The event is being organised by the Centre of Studies of Home and the Queen Mary University London. The dusters will be hung for the day, pop-up style as before, during the event so all the delegates will get a chance to see them. Vanessa will be giving a talk about the project.
How it all began...

I'm delighted to be part of this upcoming exhibition on Women and DomesticityThe Private View will be held from 2-5pm on Saturday 28th February.
We will also be taking donations for Women's Aid at this event.
Studio 11, The Old Printworks, 20 Wharf Road, Eastbourne, BN21 3UG.
The studio is just a few minutes walk from Eastbourne train station and there is parking nearby.

Curated by Vanessa Marr, women were invited to sew their opinions on to a yellow duster.
"WHAT’S YOUR OPINION?
Love it, loath it, fear it, resent it, or embrace it?
Is it an out-dated expectation or a predictable reality?
What does it mean to you personally?Stitch your perspective onto a duster!"

Here's what I stitched for the show:

Title: Call of Duty

When considering housework I tend to groan inwardly and grit my teeth. It’s like a chore to be endured rather than a task to be enjoyed. I don’t experience the satisfaction of a ‘job well done’ rather a mental image of the Forth Bridge that needs constant attention just to keep going.

I have a collection of homemaking manuals from the '40s -'50s and I particularly enjoy the jolly enthusiasm with which Good Housekeeping explains how to clean your house properly. I’ve stitched their cleaning descriptions exactly, to form the text, but I’ve placed the whole activity within the context of a Play Station game. I enjoyed the notion of ‘housework’ as an entertainment - however unlikely. ‘Call of Duty’ is a pun on the name of a popular series of computer games - but the title seemed very apt here.
